Matteo Genini is an Italian clarinetist who lives in Zurich and is mainly active in the musical area of German-speaking Switzerland. Since 2014 he has been a member of the Da Vinci Orchester Basel and since 2022 of the Zürcher Kammeroper, frequently collaborating with various orchestras and contemporary ensembles such as the Argovia Philharmonic, Kammerorchester Basel, Collegium Musicum Basel, Orchestra della Svizzera italiana and Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen.

He’s active in the field of experimentation and chamber music. He has performed at several festivals in Italy including: Lingotto Musica, Rassegna Giovani Talenti of the Ambrosianum association, Festival MiTo, Festival Giordano and abroad: Lucerne Festival, Murten Classic (Switzerland), Mock-Ba Tansition in Music (Russia), Eureka Springs Music Festival (United States of America), Moritzburg Festival (Germany).

As principal clarinet, co-soloist or chamber musician, he has been a member of various orchestras and opera houses including: the Würth Philharmoniker, Milano Classica, Zürcher Symphoniker, the Orchestra of the Fondazione Arena di Verona, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the Neues Orchester Basel, the City Light Symphony Orchestra, the Ensemble Symphonique de Neuchâtel and the Ensemble Diagonal.
He has had the honor of working with conductors and conductors including: Markus Poschner, Jonathan Nott, Daniel Oren, Umberto Benedetti Michelangeli, Placido Domingo, Julian Kovatchev, Peter Rundel, Rodolfo Fisher, Grant Liewellin, Douglas Bostock, Josep Vicent, Sascha Goetzel, Antonio Ballista, Marco Armialiato, Jürg Henneberger, Tulio Gagliardo Vargas, Christian Knüsel, Ives Senn, Dieter Wagner, Christoph Rehli, C. Myron Flippin, Ben Palmer and Helmut Imig.

During his years of study, he was principal clarinet of the Moritzburg Festival Orchestra and The World Orchestra for two years, during which he took part in tours of multiple theatres in different countries.

First overall prize “at the International Concerto Competition” in 2011 in Arkansas which gave him the opportunity to debut as a soloist in the United States. In recent years he has won or been a finalist in several international competitions, among which the following stand out: the “Murten Classics Competition” in 2014, the “Rotary Club Viverone Lago” in 2007, and “Chignolo D’isola” in 2001.

Graduated as a doctor of musical arts (cum laude) and in music pedagogy at the University of Lucerne in the class of prof. Paolo Beltramini and in Music Performance at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel in the class of Prof. François Benda. During his years at the University of Milan he was a student in the class of Prof. Sergio del Mastro at the G. Verdi Conservatory. He began studying the clarinet at the music middle school in Domodossola, his hometown, with the teacher. Gabriele Oglina.

In 2013 he published a thesis in German that deals with a new ergonomic approach to the instrument with reflections on current philosophy on art (“Psychophysiche Reflexionen und Praktische Tipps für das Klarinettenspiel im Rahmen der allgemeinen künstlerischen Welt”).

“De Sono” scholarship holder from 2010 to 2014 and winner of the first scholarship organized by the “Associazione Insieme in Musica” of Domodossola. Active student in various masterclasses held by the masters: Richard Stoltzman, Milan Rericha, Denis Zanchetta, Sergio Azzolini, Omar Zoboli, Pascal Moragues, Enrico Baroni, Stefano Palli, Karl Leister and Alessandro Carbonare.

Since 2023, Matteo has been a board member of the Swiss Clarinet Society and a contact person for Italian-speaking members.

Since 2018, Matteo has been an international endorser and speaker for German-speaking Switzerland for the clarinets of Ripa Music.
